English translation:“No one wants to see the real you—they just want to see the version of you that you put on.”

(Chinese Film: Dreams May Come)

This line appears midway through the film, during a late-night conversation between the actress “Lao Xu” and the director in his room, as they discuss the TV series they are currently filming. Lao Xu, tired of playing an “innocent” character in the script, threatens to walk off the set. The director tries to persuade her to stay, and the two argue—starting with the script and moving on to life philosophy—until the conversation ultimately turns to the boundary between “being a person” and “acting.” In this world where the line between reality and fiction is blurred, what people truly consume is never “reality,” but rather “performance.” The film features almost no exterior shots; the entire 90-minute runtime consists of a dialogue between Xu Jinglei and Han Tongsheng, regarded as a “clash of souls expressed through Wang Shuo-style language.”

With this ultimate “anti-self-help” statement, the film exposes the unspoken rule of interpersonal relationships—that the essence of social interaction is a tacit “performance contract.” Through his character, Wang Shuo further elaborates on this logic in the film: “Pretending isn’t shameful; it’s only shameful if you pretend poorly.” ” Within this framework, “putting on a show” is no longer a pejorative act, but rather a fundamental skill for social survival. The standard by which people judge one another has never been “whether you are sincere,” but rather “whether you perform appropriately and to the audience’s satisfaction.”

The spiritual dilemma of modern people—the perpetual split between the “true self” and the “social self.” The female lead’s restlessness and confusion in the film stem precisely from her weariness of playing the role of an “innocent young woman,” yet finding that she lacks the courage or ability to reveal her “true self” in the workplace. This is not unique to any particular industry, but rather a widespread identity anxiety in contemporary workplaces and social settings—once you tear off all your “personas” and “masks,” the real you may be someone even you yourself cannot define. As the film suggests: what we may find repulsive is not “acting” itself, but “acting” to the point of losing ourselves, unable to distinguish which mask is our true face.

Another line from the film creates a counterpoint to this: “Do you know how light greets light? In the darkest place.” When all the acting fails, when the spotlight goes out, the “you” left behind—unwatched by any audience—is the cruelest truth of this performance.

Dignity for adults does not mean refusing to “act,” but rather knowing clearly when you are acting—and for whom. The role you choose to play often defines who you are more than the person you aspire to be.
