This line appears toward the end of the film as a voice-over reflection by Kiki, following her journey of growth—which included leaving home to live independently, losing her magical powers, and finding the strength to bounce back—as she returns to her hometown or reunites with her parents. Kiki is a 13-year-old witch. According to the traditions of the magical world, she must leave home and live alone in an unfamiliar city for a year before she can officially become a fully qualified witch. She arrives in a coastal city and starts a courier service called “Home Express.” Through her deliveries, she meets all kinds of people and experiences difficult moments—including setbacks to her self-confidence, a decline in her magical powers, and times when she cries alone. When she finally overcomes these challenges and rediscovers herself, this line serves as her reflection on her growth: Growing up isn’t about becoming invincible, but about learning to smile and embrace those who love you even after you’ve cried.

Learning to grow up, learning to endure, learning to smile and embrace life after crying. We usually imagine growing up as some kind of dramatic transformation—experiencing a major event that completely changes us. But Qiqi’s journey was slow and made up of small, everyday moments: losing a package, catching a cold in the rain, being scolded by a guest, and lying awake alone in a strange room. These moments of “growing up” lack any sense of ceremony; they are simply resilience built up bit by bit through day after day of feeling out of place. True growth often isn’t achieved in a single defining moment, but rather on those afternoons when, after crying, you still have to go out and deliver the next package.

Qiqi doesn’t stop crying just because she’s grown up—she still cries, and she still feels lonely, wronged, and discouraged. But what has changed is this: after she cries, she still has the strength to embrace the person who loves her. This isn’t “pretending everything’s fine,” but a more mature kind of tenderness—you know someone loves you, so you can allow yourself to cry; and precisely because someone loves you, you’re willing to smile again after you’ve cried. Qiqi’s parents didn’t show much concern before she left home, but she carried their love with her throughout the entire journey, and the moment she finally gave that “smiling hug” signified that she had come to understand the weight of that love.

We’re often taught to “be strong,” “don’t cry,” and “don’t worry your parents,” so we hide our vulnerability and wear smiles as armor. But Qiqi says: You can cry, you can endure, and you can still smile and embrace others after you’ve cried. Smiling and embracing isn’t because you haven’t been hurt, but because you’ve learned how to deal with those wounds and are still willing to respond with warmth to those who love you.
