English translation: Cherish today; cherish the present. No one knows whether tomorrow or misfortune will come first.

清太(Qing Tai)

This line appears toward the end of the film as an inner monologue by Seita, who, after losing his younger sister Setsuko, lies in a train station reflecting on his short life. The story takes place in Japan toward the end of World War II. Fourteen-year-old Seita and four-year-old Setsuko lose their mother in an air raid. They subsequently stay with relatives but are driven out as the war intensifies, forcing them to hide alone in an air-raid shelter. Eventually, Setsuko dies of malnutrition, and Seita starves to death at the train station shortly thereafter.

The entire film is a tragedy “without miracles”; from beginning to end, the audience watches helplessly as the lives of these two children are consumed by the war. This line appears in the moment just before Seita’s death—he no longer had the strength to do anything; he could only lie there, watching scenes from his past flash before his eyes, and finally grasping a truth he hadn’t had time to put into practice while he was alive: he had once believed that tomorrow would come as usual, and that Setsuko would still be able to eat her next meal, but he didn’t know that “the unexpected” would arrive sooner than “tomorrow.”

We talk about “living in the moment” every day, but few people truly believe that “tomorrow might never come”—because for most of us, tomorrow does indeed come. But the story of Seita and Setsuko is that “exception”—their tomorrow truly never came. Setsuko didn’t live to see the end of the war, and Seita didn’t live to see Setsuko grow up. When the audience sees that scene, the weight of that line is no longer merely a “reminder,” but a verdict that has already been handed down: they lost the only thing they had because they didn’t understand this truth, while you still have the chance to avoid making the same mistake.

In a society where life proceeds as normal, we can make plans, save money, and make commitments because we believe the future extends into the future. But in Seita’s world, that line of the future is severed every single day—today, he doesn’t know if he’ll find food; tomorrow, he doesn’t know if the air-raid shelter will be bombed. The reason he “didn’t cherish the present” wasn’t because he didn’t want to, but because every day he struggled to survive for tomorrow—and that “tomorrow,” for which he exhausted all his energy, never actually arrived. This line isn’t a reproach, but a helpless sigh: you can never know whether “tomorrow” will come before it actually does.

We put off too many things until “later”—we’ll talk about it later, see you later, do it later. But Seita’s story reminds us: the “later” you speak of is, in fact, an uncertain possibility. Those tomorrows you assume will surely come may vanish from your life in the blink of an eye due to an unexpected event. Cherishing today, cherishing the present, isn’t just a cliché—it’s an acknowledgment of the “true finiteness of time.”
