English translation: Just by letting go of the desire to be understood, life becomes much easier.

This line appears in a日常 scene from One-Punch Man—a seemingly casual yet profoundly insightful remark Saitama casually makes to those around him. Saitama is a man who became a hero “just for fun,” possessing overwhelming power that allows him to “defeat any enemy with a single punch,” yet his daily life is extremely simple—snapping up discounted items at the supermarket, worrying about rent, and being mistaken for a weirdo by passersby. He isn’t troubled by the thought that “no one understands me,” because he simply doesn’t need others to understand him. As his disciple, Genos constantly tries to understand his master’s thoughts and analyzes his behavior with complex logic; Saitama, however, simply tells him: “If you stop expecting others to understand you, you’ll find life much easier.” This statement isn’t a condescending lecture, but rather an extremely effective life tip offered by someone who has truly lived life to the fullest.

“The desire to be understood” is a form of desire—and the essence of desire is “lack.” When you hope others will understand you, you’re actually acknowledging a premise: no one understands me right now. You’re waiting for external validation, and the power to grant that validation lies outside your control. There’s only one thing you can do—explain yourself, prove yourself, and hope the other person picks up on your signals the right way. In this process, you invest a great deal of emotion, yet you have no control over the outcome. When Saitama says “Let it go,” he isn’t saying “Don’t communicate”; rather, he means: Remove “being understood” from your list of needs, do what you need to do, and that’s enough.

The reason Saitama has become a person who is “unshakable because he has no desires” is precisely because he has long since let go of the desires that most people cannot let go of. He doesn’t seek fame (though he’s powerful, hardly anyone knows him), he doesn’t seek recognition (he never explains why he’s a hero), and he doesn’t seek understanding (the words he spoke to Genos are a reflection of himself). This lifestyle of “letting go of desire” has granted him complete inner freedom—because he no longer needs anyone’s response to validate his worth.

We often feel wronged, angry, or lonely because of others’ misunderstandings, repeatedly explaining, proving ourselves, and hoping, “This time you’ll understand.” But Saitama’s approach is this: let go of that expectation, and you’ll no longer be held back by others’ reactions. You can still express yourself and take action, but the outcome no longer affects you—because you no longer view “being understood” as a necessity, but merely as a bonus that’s “nice to have.”
