This line appears in the middle to late part of the second season (R2) of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, and represents Lelouch’s sober analysis of his own actions as he finds himself caught between the dual pressures of power and emotion. Lelouch is an avenger who took on the identity of “Zero” to overthrow the rule of the Britannian Empire. He constantly manipulates others through strategy, lies, and scheming, and has shed hypocritical tears on countless occasions—to gain trust, to conceal his identity, and to achieve his goals. He also frequently covers his face with the “Zero” mask, revealing his signature smile beneath it; yet behind that smile lies not joy, but growing loneliness and emotional exhaustion. This line is his reckoning with the very act of “disguise” following a certain mission—he is fully aware of what he is doing and fully understands the consequences of those disguises: externally, they harm others; internally, they erode his own being.

We assume that tears represent sadness and smiles represent happiness, but Lelouch points out that when these expressions are deliberate rather than spontaneous, their nature is completely reversed. Fake tears may appear to express vulnerability, but they are actually a form of manipulation—they exploit others’ sympathy and, in essence, hurt their feelings. And while a fake smile may seem to convey friendliness, it is actually a form of self-exhaustion—the more you smile when you don’t want to, the further you drift from your true self. Lelouch has used these two forms of disguise countless times throughout his life; he understands their cost better than anyone, so this statement is not a condemnation of others, but an honest description of his own state of being.
Lelouch is an extremely intelligent and rational person; precisely because of this, he cannot excuse his actions by saying, “I didn’t know.” He is fully aware that he is exploiting and deceiving others, and he knows this will come back to haunt him in the future, yet he still chooses to continue. Every tear of pretense he shed deepened the suffering of those he deceived; every “Zero Smile” he displayed pushed him further into loneliness. The path he chose demanded that he become a “completely hypocritical” person, yet he could not become utterly numb—so he had to endure a double burden: the harm he inflicted on others became his guilt, and the harm he inflicted on himself became his pain.
We live in an era where emotions are highly performative—on social media, we showcase an “idealized self”; at work, we maintain a “professional facade”; and to our families, we reassure them with “I’m fine.” This isn’t hypocrisy; it’s part of a survival strategy. But Lelouch’s words remind us to be mindful of boundaries: when you frequently rely on “hypocritical expressions” to navigate the world, you must realize they come at a cost. External pretense will eventually be exposed or worn away, while internal repression will, at some point, rebound in a far more intense manner.
