家/Film/Nigel: You know, in case you were wondering – the person whose calls you always take?

“You know, in case you were wondering – the person whose calls you always take? That’s the relationship you’re in.”

(Nigel)

(English: The Devil Wears Prada)

This line appears midway through the film; it’s a slightly sarcastic yet spot-on remark Nigel makes to Andy when she’s feeling confused about her romantic situation. Andy has just graduated from college and, by a stroke of luck, landed a job at the top fashion magazine Runway as assistant to Editor-in-Chief Miranda. She has a steady boyfriend who is a chef, but her life is being completely consumed by Miranda’s endless phone calls, frantic work pace, and utterly unpredictable demands. Torn between her job and her boyfriend, she feels exhausted and lost. As the magazine’s art director, Nigel had a clear, outside perspective. After Andy stood up her boyfriend yet again because of a call from Miranda, he used this line to expose the reality she was unwilling to face: “You say you care about your boyfriend, but you’re always on the phone with someone else—that’s the relationship you’re truly invested in.” This remark acted like a mirror, allowing Andy to see the true priorities behind her behavior, and it also set the stage for her subsequent choices between “career” and “love/self.”

Nigel: You know, in case you were wondering - the person whose calls you always take?

We usually think of “caring” as an abstract emotion that’s hard to quantify—it encompasses a complex array of elements, including sacrifice, compromise, patience, and longing. But Nigel says: Stop beating around the bush; just check your phone’s call log and you’ll know. Whose calls do you always answer? Whose calls do you quietly silence during meetings? For whom would you put down what you’re doing and walk to the window to answer? These seemingly casual, minor choices are the “subconscious votes” that reveal your true inner priorities. Andy always answers Miranda’s calls the moment they ring, no matter where he is or what he’s doing—but when his boyfriend calls, he often hears, “I’m busy right now; call me later.” This contrast lends Nigel’s statement the devastating power of an “observational truth”: Actions never lie; where you spend your time is where your heart lies.

In modern relationships, there’s a truth that’s widely avoided—the disconnect between “choice” and “commitment.” We’re accustomed to declaring, “I care about you,” yet we devote our most readily available attention to work, socializing, or some other, more “intrusive” relationship. It’s not that Andy doesn’t love her boyfriend, but her “immediate response” to Miranda has become an unconscious pattern of dependence: Miranda’s needs always take priority over everything else, because her job is, in itself, a system of constant urgency. Nigel’s words weren’t meant to urge Andy to “choose her boyfriend” or “choose her job,” but rather to force her to see: your “caring” has already cast its vote through your actions, yet you’ve been slow to acknowledge this outcome consciously. This cognitive lag is the root of her pain—she thought she was struggling with a dilemma, but in reality, she had already made a choice; she simply refused to admit it.

Up until then, she had always defined herself as “an outsider who stumbled into the fashion world,” believing, “I’m only here temporarily; my real life is out there.” But Nigel’s words reminded her: “Real life” isn’t the one you claim to want, but the one you’re actually living every day. She began to realize that she was increasingly enjoying this world she had once looked down upon, caring more and more about Miranda’s approval, and growing ever more adept at wearing high heels and designer labels. Those words pierced the illusion that “I’m still the same person I used to be,” forcing her to confront a question: If I’m willing to give everything for this job, has this job, to some extent, already become “my real life”?

We live in an era of “multitasking” and “always-on” connectivity, where phone notifications, work messages, and instant responses on social media form an almost irresistible system that steals our attention. And the so-called “caring” is being redefined as: in the countless moments when you have to choose who to respond to, whom you prioritize without a second thought. Those people whose calls you “always answer”—whether they’re your partner, children, close friends, or your boss and clients—are marking your true priorities in the simplest way possible. And Nigel’s line serves as a reminder to everyone: If you want to know what you truly care about, don’t ask your mind—ask your call log.

Finally, when Andy left Miranda, threw away her phone, and set out for a new life, she finally put into practice the flip side of Nigel’s line: for those you don’t care about, you’ll eventually hang up on them. She no longer answered Miranda’s calls—not because she hated her, but because she had finally put herself back at the top of the list of “people who matter.”
