This line appears toward the end of the film, after William Wallace has been captured by British forces and is awaiting execution in a prison cell at the Tower of London. Severely wounded and bound to a rack, he is about to face the torture of having his abdomen cut open. In his final moments, a jailer—who was actually a secret envoy of the Scottish nobleman Robert—approached him and asked him to cry out “mercy” before he died to ease his suffering. Wallace ignored this request. Instead, mustering his last ounce of strength, he spoke calmly and resolutely: “Your heart is free; have the courage to pursue freedom.” He was then dragged to the execution ground, where, under the gaze of the crowd, he endured inhuman torture—yet at the very last moment, with every ounce of his strength, he shouted the words that shook history: “Freedom—!”This phrase was not only Wallace’s final testament to his comrades-in-arms but also the ultimate embodiment of the film’s central theme: “Freedom is greater than life.” It was not a victor’s proclamation, but rather the last words of a dying man, who, with his final breath, passed the torch of “freedom” on to those who would follow.

But Wallace said, “Your heart is free”—this means that freedom is first and foremost a choice of the heart, and only then the result of action. Even if you are locked in a cage, bound to a rack, or surrounded by a vast army, as long as you still believe in freedom in your heart, you are not truly a prisoner. This is a philosophical shift that elevates freedom from the “physical realm” to the “spiritual realm”—it transforms freedom from something “bestowed upon you” into something “chosen by yourself.” When Wallace spoke these words, his body was already bound in chains, but his heart had never been captured—this was his most thorough embodiment of “freedom.”
“The heart is free” is an inner realization, but realization alone is not enough—without courage, a free heart remains merely a secret hidden within the chest, never to become a reality in life. Wallace told his fellow prisoners, “Have the courage to pursue freedom,” because he knew that most people do not lack a heart that yearns for freedom; rather, they lack the courage to turn that yearning into action. They fear failure, fear death, and fear losing their present peace of mind, so they treat their “free heart” as a private comfort, yet dare not let it see the light of day. Wallace’s life, however, was a complete journey from “inner freedom” to “freedom of action”—he could have sworn allegiance to the King of England to save his life, but he did not; he could have cried out “Mercy!” at the place of execution to ease his suffering, but he did not. With each of these “no’s,” he proved that courage is the act of turning the freedom in one’s heart into the path beneath one’s feet.
The death of one man awakened the courage of millions; a heart held captive ignited an entire nation’s struggle for freedom. Wallace’s body was dismembered, but his last words became part of Scotland’s DNA, passed down through the generations. The reason this film has become a classic in cinematic history is precisely because this line pierces through the surface of “freedom” as an abstract concept, restoring it to something a living, breathing person clings to even in the darkest of moments.
