English translation: It was my good fortune to meet you at the best time of my life.

(Gong Ruomei)

(Chinese Film: The Grandmaster)

This line appears toward the end of the film, during Gong Er’s final encounter with Ip Man as she nears the end of her life. Gong Er is the daughter of Gong Baosen, a master of Northern Bagua Zhang; she is highly skilled in martial arts and has a fiery temperament. She and Ip Man met during the “North-South Martial Arts Tournament,” and through their sparring, they developed mutual respect and romantic feelings for one another. However, due to the responsibilities they bore toward their respective martial arts schools and the changing times, they were unable to be together. To avenge her father’s death, Gong Er took a vow (swearing never to marry, never to pass on her martial arts, and never to have children), and ultimately fell gravely ill after carrying out her revenge. Many years later, she reunited with Ip Man in Hong Kong. As they sat together, an unbridgeable distance remained between them. She spoke these words to Ip Man, adding, “It’s a pity I don’t have much time left.” This statement was not only a farewell to an unfulfilled love but also an acknowledgment of the choices she had made in her life—she had no regrets, even though this chance had come too late and faded too quickly.

We often describe love as “destiny” or “fate,” as if meeting someone were a preordained arrangement. But Gong Er says, “It was my luck”—she downgrades the encounter from “inevitability” to “chance,” and from “fate” to “probability.” This shift in wording imbues the encounter with a light yet precious quality: it is not something the heavens owe you, but something you happened to come across; it is not something to be taken for granted, but something to be grateful for. Gong Er experienced far too many things beyond her control throughout her life—she could not choose her birth, could not escape vengeance, and could not resist the torrent of history. Yet amid all these “unchoices,” she still regarded “meeting Ip Man at the best possible time” as a stroke of luck. This “luck” did not stem from what she gained, but from the fact that, in a life destined to lose everything, she at least had that one moment.

People often say that “meeting the right person at the right time” is life’s greatest blessing, but Gong Er and Ip Man’s encounter took place precisely at the “wrong time”—the divide between their martial arts schools, the weight of their family feud, and the upheavals of the era all seemed to say, “You cannot be together.” Yet Gong Er still called it her “best time,” because that “best” didn’t mean “the conditions were ripe for them to be together,” but rather “she was in the most whole, clear-headed, and powerful state of her life.” It was in that state that she met Ip Man, so even though they couldn’t be together, she remained grateful for the encounter itself. The best time isn’t when “everything falls into place,” but when “I am exactly where I need to be.” And meeting you was the brightest ray of light that shone into that “exact moment” of mine.

Gong Er was the most thorough in “seeing herself” throughout her life—she knew what she wanted, what she could handle, and what price she was willing to pay. She chose not to pass on her martial arts, not to marry, and not to have children, yet on her deathbed she still spoke of “my luck”—this means that in her most complete state, she confirmed that the most important thing in her life was not achieving fame and success, but being fully seen by another person within that complete self.

There are always people in our lives who “come and go,” and we habitually define them as “regrets.” But Gong Er offers a more dignified perspective: there’s no need to label an encounter as a regret simply because we couldn’t hold onto it forever. In those relationships, you may have been at your most lucid, most powerful, and most true to yourself—and that person just happened to pass by. That, in itself, is a kind of luck.
