English translation:I can’t choose how I’m born or how I die, but I can decide how to love and how to live. This is the freedom I want—my golden age.

萧红(Xiao Hong)

(Chinese Film: The Golden Era)

This line appears at the end of the film, serving as a summation of Xiao Hong’s life of wandering and displacement. From fleeing an arranged marriage in Northeast China, to drifting through poverty, to loving and parting ways with Xiao Jun, to living in exile in Hong Kong during wartime, and finally dying of illness amid the chaos—Xiao Hong was never able to choose her origins, her era, or the manner of her death. Yet in every moment of desperation, she actively chose how to love, how to write, and how to live. This monologue is both her reflection on her own existence and her response to those who tried to define her—“my golden era” was not the most stable or prosperous period of her life, but rather every moment in which she retained the dignity of choice.

Even within the confines of a cage dictated by fate, there still exists a personal realm of freedom. Xiao Hong’s life and death were a fate co-written by the era, war, gender, and her own body—a fate she was powerless to rewrite. Yet through “how to love” and “how to live,” she defied that fate. Her life was one of constant upheaval, yet she never lost her capacity to love—to love words, to love freedom, and to love those who briefly walked beside her, even if every love ended in parting. Her “golden age” was not bestowed by a prosperous era, but rather a sanctuary she built for herself amidst the ruins.

People generally believe that a golden age should be one of stability, abundance, and recognition, but Xiao Hong said that her golden age was precisely the era in which she chose love and freedom. It was not the richness of “possession,” but the abundance of “choice.” She would rather go hungry while writing The Field of Life and Death than become the “proper woman” as defined by others; she would rather write amidst the ravages of war while ill than let her soul wither away in comfort. For her, the “Golden Age” was not a gift of time, but a badge of character.

Xiao Hong lived in an era when women had almost no say—marriages were arranged by parents, worth was measured by men, and lives were determined by war. Yet she stubbornly carved out her own agency in the cracks of that world. With the question “How to love?” she broke free from the shackles of an arranged marriage; with “How to live?” she cast off the path of dependence on men. The weight of these words is no less than that of a declaration of freedom—they say: even if the whole world dictates how you should live, you can still burn with your own will in the tiniest of cracks.

She was always a soul unwilling to be swallowed by her times; the freedom she chose was her Golden Age.
